In this session we will discuss some background facts, myths and motivations related to Scala language and its usage: What's wrong with Java? Why couldn't typed dynamic languages fill the gap? What does Scala have to offer in the thriving Polyglot market? And how does it compare to Java on one hand and Ruby on the other in terms of code length, performance and more.

I was thinking over the past couple of weeks about my own personal take on open source development and where I fit in it:

We've all been there once or twice before - or, at least, saw it so happen to the guy behind the next flat screen - taking part in a dead-end project, no hope for reaching maturity; delirious mind start-ups that somehow sprung into existence, waiting from the first moment to be redeemed by the sound of closing taps, in the meantime taking up your day, your energies; situations where inner politics thrive and professionalism isn't sought after; you find yourself thinking about avoiding bug fixes, avoiding the next wave of dismissals, avoiding innovativeness - what for, right?

I wanted to share some of the bottom lines we drew from the last discussions regarding the community site, and tell you about some other things I've been working on.

 1. Complaints you've raised

Over engineering

agreed. I've shut off some of the modules in the site that were not used, for example Audio (for podcasts), chat rooms, messaging, etc. As a result, the common functionality should get clearer

Over control

I've added more reasonable navigation flows.
I think we should also do some live training/usage sessions, at least for group owners to pass it on. What do you think?
