Giants like Microsoft, Amazon and Google are using open source software to provide their cloud services, challenging the traditional open source players.

How will the open source players confornt the “new kids”? Can they keep their leadership in open source software services?

According to: the451groupblog  Ubuntu is going to support OpenStack. Eucalyptus will still be supported but I belief such a statment means that most of the devlopment / integration efforts will be put into OpenStack, The title chosen by 451 group "Ubuntu broadening cloud coverage" could be right in terms of a deal setup with Vmware's Cloudfoundry and Ubuntu 11.10, but I am not sure Eucalyptus will servive the test of time, I guess we will have to wait and see ...

OStatic reported on how Microsoft’s and Amazon’s cloud strategies face open source challenges.

When I asked Eucalyptus Systems' Rich Wolski, who helped create the Eucalyptus Software, what companies are doing with the software, he said:

"They're doing a variety of things, but a lot of them are basically interested in Eucalyptus for doing the same kinds of things they're doing in Amazon AWS, such as business logic applications, where part of the attraction of Eucalyptus is that they can use it as a platform for seamlessly running their public cloud applications and their on-premise cloud apps."

From Matthew Asselt Blog:

There has been a significant increase in interest in the Memcached, the open source distributed memory object-caching system, in recent months, as a number of vendors look to exploit its popularity in Web 2.0 and social networking environments.

Like Hadoop, which has become the focus of a number of commercial plays, it would appear that the time is right for commercialization of Memcached. But what is it, here did it come from, and what are the chances for vendors to rake in serious cash? Here are the details.
