Which editor do you prefer for our community site?

Hello,

We're debating if we should replace the current editor for the posts in the site and if so, what editor to replace it with. The resons for change is to get something that makes editing posts easier.

Current alternatives are:

The differences are mainly:

  • ckeditor is much more feature reach in terms of styling, colors, tables, etc.
  • wmd is wiki-syntax based. there are buttons to generate the wiki markup for you, but the formatting is all in plain text.
  • both have preview options. ckeditor's preview is on request (opens a new window when clicking a button), wmd's is live, as you type.

One other issue is of syntax highlighting for code snippets. There are two choices:

The main differences are:

  • syntaxhighlighter and geshi are more feature rich in terms of presenting the code: zebra lines, toolbar (e.g., for copying to clipboard).
  • google prettify can autodetect the language of the snippet. this means you just copy paste the code inside the article and it will be highlighted with syntaxhighligher or geshi there needs to be another step of specifying the language (either via a dialog or by wrapping in a tag)

wmd+google code prettify are what stackoverflow.com is using. ckeditor and syntaxhighligher/geshi are the more popular in general.

I don't care which syntax highlighter is used as long as it supports action script

+1 wmd - i prefer to not need to lift my hands of the keyboard and not have to go to hack HTML when the layout goes wrong

+1 google-prettify - i don't want to need to paste into a dialog or remember tags and attributes to wrap my code with

I don't really understand - what's wrong with the existing one?

It seems that ckeditor has what we have today - with added unneeded features, and wmd-editor is something completely different (and low on possibilities).

Anyway:

-1 for wmd-editor

CKEditor is the next generation of the FCKEditor we have today, it has better features like full page editing (with the maximize toolbar button) and better preview. its a word processor.

WMD should be faster and esier to use once you learn its markdown language, its maent for fast editing and posting with code snippets and is good for the majority of our community posts, but lacks some features like file upload, image editing and complex formatting.

I prefer something that limits the way we write the posts. I think that a common template or styling for all posts looks cleaner and more professional. I won't miss the feature of choosing my font type, for example, because there's no reason that all posts won't be with the same font and size.

What I'm saying is - if there's an editor that lets us write in a predefined template-  I'm for it.

(which means, BTW, that now the -1 for wmd-editor becomes:

+1 for wmd-editor )
